On November 26-27 an international academic symposium to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Sun Yat-sen’s birth will be held at the Integrated Research Center of Kobe University. This event is organized by the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Foundation with support from the Center for Asian Academic Collaboration (part of the Kobe University Institute for Promoting International Partnerships).

The symposium will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sun Yat-sen (1866-1925) known as “the father of modern China”. We plan to explore new research areas under the symposium theme of “Sun Yat-sen and the Asia-Pacific – crossing borders”. Sun Yat-sen is thought of as “China’s great revolutionary and thinker”, and by choosing the area of the Asia-Pacific, we aim to reexamine him from broad and varied perspectives. To this end, in addition to mainland China we have also invited researchers from Taiwan, Singapore, Australia, the west coast of America, and Italy. By clarifying various issues surrounding the politics, economics, society and culture encountered in the Asia-Pacific from Sun Yat-sen’s era to the modern day, we hope to answer questions from those interested in contemporary international relations and cultural exchange.

The event will include two keynote speeches from Japanese and Chinese researchers, four breakout sessions (Systems and the Public Sphere, Those who Inherit Sun Yat-sen’s Philosophy, Crossing Borders, and Participation and Mobilization), and will finish with a general discussion. Further details can be found on the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall homepage (Japanese language only; URL: http://sonbun.or.jp/en/).

Anyone with an interest in Japan-China relations is welcome to participate in this event. We look forward to your attendance.
