The Center for Asian Studies at the Institute of Promoting International Collaboration Programs at Kobe University hosted a symposium titled East Asian Knowledge and the Sun Yat-sen’s Pan-Asianism Memorial Symposium on Nov. 28th and 29th. The Symposium, held at Kobe University and the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, was co-sponsored by the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Foundation and the Kobe Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and commemorated the 90th anniversary of the Sun Yat-sen’s Pan-Asianism speech given in Kobe, Japan.
On Day 1, an international symposium titled East Asian Knowledge and the Sun Yat-sen’s Pan-Asianism Memorial Symposium was held at Kobe University Takikawa Memorial Hall. Professor SAITO Akira, Director of the Center for Asian Studies, and Mr. YASUI Sankichi, Vice Chairman of the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Foundation, gave the opening remarks, and Mr. KANAZAWA Kazuo, Vice Governor of Hyogo Prefecture, gave a congratulatory speech.
During the Symposium, four lectures were given on various various themes by the distinguished lecturers: Professor SAKAI Naoki, Department of Asian Studies at Cornell University (U.S.A); Professor LIU Weikai, College of Liberal Arts at the National Chengchi University (Taiwan); Professor SANG Bing, School of Humanities at Sun Yat-sen University; and Professor WANG Ke, Graduate School of Intercultural Studies at Kobe University.
The lectures were followed by a Q&A session. More than 100 people participated the Symposium, and many inquiries were made by the participants. Lecturers addressed these inquiries which provided the opportunity to the participants to gain a deeper appreciation on each lecture.
On Day 2, a lecture meeting titled Kobe and the Sun Yat-sen’s Pan-Asianism Speech were given by Mr. YASUI Sankichi, former Director of the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall.
The symposium and the lecture meeting became an opportunity to explore the academic significance of the East Asian Knowledge through a considerate interpretation of the message that was included in the Sun Yat-sen’s Pan-Asianism speech. It has also become an opportunity to re-acknowledge the political and cultural value which Sun Yat-sen bequested to future generations.
