International Symposium "Women in Science and Education

 The forth international symposium "Women in Science and Education" was held at Kobe University, Japan, on December 5th, 2013. The Symposium was attended by about 100 participants.

 The subject of the Symposium was “Gender, Risk Management and Resiliency.” In the first half of the program, we had three lectures. The first speaker was Ms. S. Gülser CORAT, Director of Division for Gender Equality UNESCO, she spoke on “Disaster Risk Reduction –How Does Gender Equality Help?” Next, Associate Professor, Siriporn Wajjalku, Thammasat University gave a talk on “The crisis management: Shared experiences and lessons learned”. Finally, Professor Machiko Kamiyama, Yamagata University, made a speech about “Psycho-social support after the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011”.

 In the latter half of the program, we had a panel discussion. The panel was chaired by, Dr. Masuteru Murosaki, Professor Emeritus of Kobe University, and the panel included Professor, Ronni Alexander, Kobe University, Professor, Satoshi Oishi, Kobe University, Associate Professor, Yasuko Kuwata ,Kobe University, and Associate Professor, Saki Kasuya, Kobegakuin University .

 The panel discussions covered “Gender,”“Disaster Reduction,” and “Safety and Relief.” The panelists expressed various viewpoints about the themes based on their experience from their research fields. The symposium included a collaboration between science and social science , and from this , it was agreed to continue to develop “Gender and Disaster Reduction”research along these lines.

 At the end of forth symposium, the Promotion of Gender Equality Contribution Award ceremony was held, and this year the award was given to the Gender Equality Committee, Graduate School of Health Science.
