International Symposium "Women in Science and Education

 The Third International Symposium“ Women in Science and Education” was held at Kobe University, Japan, on November 7th, 2012. The subject of the Symposium was “Peace, Diversity, Equity” The symposium was held with the support of UNESCO.

 Ms. Irina Bokova, the Director-General of UNESCO, Professor, Ingrid Scheffer, Melbourne University, and Ms. Fusako Utsumi, President of National Women’s Education Center of Japan were all invited, and we were happy to welcome them to the symposium.

 Dr. Fukuda, President of Kobe University, had an opportunity to meet and speak with Ms. Bokova, the Direcor General of UNESCO, prior to the opening of the symposium.

 Kobe University has been working to build a partnership with UNESCO. Last year, we welcomed Ms.Gulser Corat, the UNESCO Gender Equality Director. She gave a talk on gender equality to the managers and staff of Kobe University.This year, in his private meeting with Ms. Bokova, President Fukuda, outlined the goals and present conditions of gender equality at Kobe University. In addition, he expressed the intention of Kobe University to continue its collaborative relationship with UNESCO.

 Director-General of UNESCO, Ms. Bokova reaffirmed that gender equality continued to be one of the most important issues for UNESCO. She said that she was very delighted to see that the Gender Equality Office at Kobe University was established under presidential leadership and that the promoting of gender equality was being carried out in activities moving forword.
