International Symposium "Women in Science and Education

 The International Symposium "Women in Science and Education" was held at Kobe University, Japan on December 19th, 2011. The Symposium was attended by about 110 participants.

 The Symposium was held under the patronage of UNESCO. The program included three lectures. The first speaker was Ms. S. Gülser CORAT, Director of Division for Gender Equality UNESCO. Within her talk entitled “Where Are the Women? Gender Equality in Science and Education," current UNESCO programs on gender equality were presented. Professor Ann NALLEY, Cameron University, the 2006 President of the American Chemical Society gave the audience the second talk, "Leadership Among Women in Science in the USA".

 Finally, Dr.Yoshie SOUMA, a Special Adviser to the President of Kobe University, a recipient of 2011 Distinguished Woman in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Award, delivered the speech on "IYC and Women Scientists". (IYC:International Year of Chemistry)

 The panel discussion included: as the Chair, Professor Roumiana TZENKOVA , Director of Gender Equality Office, Kobe University ; Associate Professor Takanori NAGANO, Graduate School of Agriculture; Associate Professor Eri CHATANI, Graduate School of Science, addition to three speakers. Panels had a fruitful discussion on measures for increasing female researchers in the fields of Science, Engineering and Agriculture.

 At the end of the Symposium, the Kobe University Gender Equality Office, Promotion of Gender Equality Contribution Award ceremony was held and the first awardee was Professor Nobuko OHMIDO, Graduate School of Human Development and Environment.
